You Are

You are.
You exist.
That's all it takes.

Human dignity doesn't require more than that. It's evenly and equally distributed and it's constant.

Know that you are worth loving - that you are loved - just the way you are.

Just because you are.

Happy Saturday evening friends!

Friends, I'm taking a few days off from blogging, twittering, Facebooking... everything computer related, really. You see, I've got some fall leaves to enjoy. Some October sun to soak up and family and furry friends to see.

And I'm giving it my complete attention and dive wholeheartedly into the loveliness of it all.

See you soon, I won't be gone for long!

A Year in This Town

Boyfriend and kitten in our kitschy kitchen

It’s been a year now since we left the capital and moved to Linköping, Sweden’s seventh largest city with around 100 000 citizens. Leaving Stockholm is a decision that I haven’t regretted one single time.

Stockholm is a lovely, vibrant city, and Linköping is the total opposite. However, living here is easy.

There are no traffic jams (although people here tend to call ten cars in a row just that…). If you’re slow at the traffic light, noone will honk their horn.

Everything you need is within 10 minutes reach. You can go by bike almost everywhere, and it’s easy to get out on the countryside. Buying your own house is possible even for ordinary people here.

Sure, there are only a few really good cafés. Not a single restaurant that lives up to my standards, but hey, that’s ok. Because most importantly of all, this is a place where we can live a quiet and peaceful life, and this is the place where most of our friends are.

This has been a year full of reuniting with old friends, a year full of slowing down and finding a new pace, and a year full of rediscovering this town that we left in 2007/2008. I never thought I would end up here again. And here I am. Happy as can be.

No More Excuses

I’ve cleaned my desk and made myself a nice cup of hot tea. It’s raining and I haven’t got any plans for the rest of the day. There are no excuses left.

I’m devoting this day to something I love, but for some reason always seem to avoid; writing.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. To be rich and famous? No, its got more to do with me wanting to spend the rest of my life in a house by the sea with an endless amount of time to ponder over life and create stories that take me and my readers on magical inner journeys. ‘Cause that’s what it’s like to be a writer, right?

I’m actually a very goal oriented person. I strongly believe that anything is possible. Anything. I set a goal, and I do whatever it takes to get there. But this, the writing, is like a butterfly. With its erratic flight path it sometimes feels like I just can’t catch it. Worst of all, at times I even stop trying.

Why? I honestly do not know, but I’m thinking that sometimes, when you want something really, really bad, the fear of failure is simply overwhelming.

Pay it Forward

Update: All entries are taken, but I will probably do something similar another time.

That letter from Julia really inspired me to share real life objects with other bloggers, so believe me when I say that I was thrilled to find this great idea over at the funny and inspiring blog JellyBones by Trish.

So, what's it all about?

Basically, it's a chance (or risk?) for you to receive something unique and handmade from me.

  • The first three people to comment on this post will receive a little gift - something personal from me to you. Within a year (I'll do it in two months) I'll create something unique to share with you.
  • In order to receive your gift you have to play along though. Spread the love on your own blog, promising to send a little special something to the first three people to comment on your post.
  • You get 72 hours to re-post, or I'll move on to the next person on the list.

If you want to receive something unique and self-made from me in the mail and if you are willing to do the same for others, leave a comment below! Please leave your email address so that I can contact you directly. And a blog URL so that I and others can visit your blog.

I'm prepared to send gifts all over the place, so don't hesitate to comment just because you live in a different time zone or continent than I do.

A Letter Full of Sunshine and Happiness

Imagine that it’s a grey and rainy day. It’s after lunch according to the time zone of the ordinary, well-behaved citizens of this city. You, oh you, you haven’t come out of your pajama yet.

When you hear the familiar sound of the postman slamming the mailbox out on the street, you decide to not give a care what the neighbors will say about you in your pajama and rubber boots in the middle of the day (they should be at work anyway, shouldn’t they?).

Imagine that there’s only one item in the mailbox today. And it’s not an invoice. It’s not a fabulous offer for buying 3 boxes of washing powder for the price of 2. No, it’s a letter. A real letter, from a real person.

When you’ve rushed back inside, to save it from the wet, and open it, it’s like the rain clouds are suddenly chased away. The damp smell of fall is dispersed, and a scent of summer fills the room. Basil. Thyme. Sage. Tarragon and pepperoni leaf.

I received a letter from Julia behind the lovely, lovely blog The Sheer Stories. It came to me, all the way from Italy, with memories from her recent trip. Herbs that still smelled of Italy, sunshine and happiness and a beautiful handwritten letter telling me how they used to walk into the garden and collect herbs for breakfast and lunch. Thank you Julia, it really brightened up my day!

Don’t miss Julia’s adorable blog. A few of my favorite posts are the one when she got up really early to catch the morning light, the one where she made natural ink from flower petals, and the one where she shares the best method of pressing flowers.

Check out her Etsy Shop as well.

I was really inspired by this, so the next time I'm going somewhere I will be looking for a few pen pals as well. Maybe you are one of them?

Fall Flowers

There are still so many beautiful flowers and plants to bring inside. I love the combination of green, yellow, fiery orange and blue. They keep me warm at heart.

Right now I'm waiting for a friend to come over after work for some lentil soup, homemade bread and apple pie. Did I mention that I love this season?

A Love Letter

Our paths crossed when I worked odd hours at the largest shopping center in our town. The uniformed guards who patrolled the area brought you by the neck and asked what they should do to you. You were a bad boy already then.

I couldn’t stop thinking about you, and all the trouble you would get into if I didn’t came to your rescue. My squeamish heart was the reason you and I got together, my stubbornness the reason we still are.

For God knows it wasn’t easy at first. You kept me awake at night when I wanted to sleep, you were sneaky and unreliable - I can’t say anything else - and you chased away almost all our guests.

But love conquers fear, and I was determined to soften your sharpest edges and chisel out the goodness I knew was in your heart. We struggeled together against your mood swings and today, we are totally relaxed in each other's company.

Nine years after our first meeting, you are a part of me. We have ceased to be a you and a me, we are one, and you are an extension of me, I am an extension of you. In my most difficult moments you are there, giving me comfort, helping me to be present and seeing the beauty in life. You give me love, but perhaps most importantly of all, let me give my love to you, so that in my heart, there can never ever be only darkness.

You also helped me to make the right choice in the love jungle. Peter was the only boyfriend you didn’t use as a scratching pad, so he could stay.

Sorry, only in Swedish this time.

Pust! Det här var jobbigt. Nu är det er tur att våndas... ;-)

House Cleaning Finds

When doing a house cleaning – the kind where you pull everything you own out of its drawers and make huge piles on the floor – you might find:

This amazing bedspread from India, full of embroideries and quadrillions of teeny tiny mirrors that reflect the sunlight, making everything around it glimmer like stars in the sky.

A piece of old lace trim tucked into a narrow chink in one of your cupboards. It might have ended up there by coincidence, but I prefer to think that someone hid it there a long, long time ago, with the intention that I (even though I was probably not born at the time) someday would find it.

No less than 15 (fifteen) rolls of film (+ one disposable camera) from times long ago forgotten. I can’t wait to bring those memories back to life.

Those adorable French magazines from the 1930’s you forgot you had, along with postcards of about the same age, some written, some still waiting to bring greetings from you to your loved ones.

That vacuum storage bags are the thing. This one holds two cozy down bed covers plus two pillows. Saves a lot of space, and things are kept fresh in there as well. Brilliant!

That you already have a pair of the perfect black boots for the fall – no need to buy new ones, yay!

A New Love Affair

First day of fall and I’m feeling both at ease and full of expectations. I wrote a love letter to August just a couple of weeks ago. Today, with September sitting next to me, August already feels far behind and I’m ready to throw myself head over heels into a love affair with this new month.

We’ll enjoy each other’s company, I’m sure.

I’m celebrating the entrance of this new season with a house cleaning. I need to make some space in both the larder and my wardrobe for autumny things. So, I guess that’s what I will be doing for the rest of the day.

Beauty Tips By Roald

Roald Dahl, author, gives us the best beauty tip.

I wish you all a nice and sunny weekend. I will fill mine with some gardening, good food, tea drinking and cat cuddling. Maybe a movie or two. Do you have any plans for the weekend you would like to share?

1. From Me To You 2. Niznoz's photostream on Flickr 3. J. Crew Cycle Chic, found on State College Cycle Chic

Cykeln samlade damm ute i förrådet.

Photo: Let's Go Ride a Bike

I loved my car. In my opinion, it was almost a human right to have one. The sound of the accelerating engine was the sound of freedom.

My bike was nothing but a dust collector. I hated it. I hated getting all sweaty, having my hair ruined by the wind and trying to carry all my stuff on the bike. And Boyfriend, being a true cyclist, was probably losing faith in me.

Then, something happened. Since a couple of months back I can see the charm of riding on two wheels instead of four. I cycle unbesought. I actually prefer the bike, even on days when rain clouds are piling up. I've become a cyclist.

On days when I'm in doubt, I hear Montand's 'À bicyclette' in my head, and visualize how I, dressed in a flowery 50's dress, am swooshing past everyone on an old lady's bicycle with a huge smile on my face.

Are you a cyclist?

  • The bicycle, the bicycle surely, should always be the vehicle of novelists and poets.
~ Christopher Morley, American author and editor

  • Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling.
    ~ James E. Starrs

  • Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world.
    ~ Grant Petersen

  • If I can bicycle, I bicycle.
~ David Attenborough, British broadcaster and naturalist

It's Fine. Isn't It?

- Bret Easton Ellis in a Paris Review interview.

Att vilja. Våga. Drömma. Kämpa. Önska.
Å ena sidan.

Att bara vara. Acceptera. Känna tacksamhet.
Å andra sidan.

To want. To dare. To dream. To fight. To wish.
On the one hand.

Just being. Accepting. Feeling gratitude.
On the other hand.

August. Reminded of Why I Love August.

Augusti.

Pyssla i trädgården. Lapa sol tillsammans med katten. Lagra energi och värme. Den här tiden på året.

Den här tiden på året.

August.

I’m lying on a sunny balcony, draped in this very special August warmth, the kind that barely touches your skin. Just like a sheer and gauzy veil. Everywhere I look, I’m surrounded by the saturated colors of summer. The trees are still towering majestic and green. The flowerbeds are still flaunting their pink, red, white and yellow.

And the apples, they’re just about to ripen.

On a day like this, I'm reminded of why I usually take my vacation rather late in the summer. Not just to enjoy two months of anticipating and longing during June and July, but also because I’m a firm believer in beautiful August weather.

I'll do my best to really enjoy these almost heartbreakingly amazing days. Potter about in the garden. Soak up the sun together with Cat. Storing as much energy and light as possible. This time of year.

This time of year.

Pregnancy Photos – Anna, 5 Weeks To Go!

Say hello to my dear, dear friend Anna who just had her first child – Charlie. This is what Charlie looked like some five weeks ago, when Anna and I spent a whole day together taking more than 300 photos of her and the baby bump.

I'm so excited to get to know Charlie, and to hear more about this life changing experience of having a child.

Amazing Autumn Planning Guide, part 2/2

If you missed the first part, here it is.

In this second and last part of the planning guide, the time has come to prioritize.

Your lists are probably filled with sweet dreams and feelgood activities, and it’s time to decide which of these that are most important to you and find the must do’s and want to’s to dedicate some of your precious time to every week.

I’m also sharing my way of visualizing my priorities – a ‘weekly priority wheel’.

Prioritizing

1. Look at your lists. Are there common denominators? Items you can cluster? Make notes, brackets and arrows, underline, star or strikethrough – anything that helps you sort out your thoughts.

2. Pick out the three things on your lists that are absolutely dearest to you. It should be things that you feel you are almost dependent upon for survival (or at least to stay happy).

3. Choose eight (or more if you wish, but try to be realistic in terms of what you can accomplish without burning yourself) things that you need and/or want to do every single week. These choices should in some way reflect and correspond to your three dearest things-list.

Time to get creative!

I chose to visualize my priorities in a wheel. The hub, in the middle of the wheel, holds my top 3 necessities: family & friends, health and creativity. The idea is to highlight these as important reminders if you suddenly find yourself lost in the stress.

Between each spoke (eker, in Swedish), I’ve written my eight every week choices.

  • Family and friends (including the dear cat): No words needed. Absolutely necessary to make space each week to nurture your most important relations.
  • Blog: My blog inspires me to take on creative challenges and express myself in words and pictures.
  • Writing: Writing has always been a part of my life, and I’ve been wanting for a while to get serious about it. I feel the time has come now to dedicate at least a few hours every week to writing.
  • Food: Although I still like to see myself as a healthy gourmet, the truth is that during the last years, I’ve spent less and less time on eating, sometimes even forgetting to have lunch and skipping breakfast. This needs to change! I’m actually following CrimsonAnna’s advice to plan my meals ahead every week, starting today.
  • Bollywood: I love to dance, especially Bollywood. The music is cheerful and you get to use colourful clothing and heavy make-up and jewellery – no further explanation needed. Bollywood dancing also supports a healthy lifestyle, which is in the hub of my wheel.
  • Yoga: Same here. I like it and it makes me healthy.
  • Housekeeping: Well, nothing that I love to do, but have to. This is just a reminder to take some time each week to tidy up my home.
  • Work: Well, I’m still on sick leave but guessing I will be ready to go back to work sometime during this fall. Putting it in my weekly priority wheel also serves the purpose of reminding me not to let work outrival the other spokes in my wheel. It's just one of many things in life.

There were two things on my wish list that I wasn’t really happy to remove, so these are hanging as bonus activities for me to pick like sweet apples whenever I get the time. Instead of taking on weekly pottery classes, I will look for a weekend course.

How to use the weekly priority wheel

Keep it visible. Consult it every Sunday when making plans for next week. Make sure you stick to your three top priorities and make time and space – each week – for the eight spokes.

Happy planning!

Amazing Autumn Planning Guide, Part 1/2

Ok. It's NOT autumn yet, but August always fills me with that feverish fresh start feeling that makes me want to plan, organize, and buy heaps of pens and notebooks – out with the old, in with the new!

In that spirit, I’ve spent some time thinking about what I want of this coming autumn, a process I hope will help me to stay focused as well as balanced. In a series of two posts, I'm sharing my way of prioritizing and organizing the different parts of my life.

It’s no rocket science, but something that worked for me (of course, I can only refer to the process itself so far, but it felt really good taking some time thinking about these things).

The goal: Finding out what makes you happy and creating space for just that!

Roles and Relations

We all have different roles in our lives, some that we have chosen, some that have been given to us, and others that are… just there. I believe healthy and happy relations are key to a good life, therefore, take a few minutes to list the roles you have.

I am: Girlfriend, daughter, sister, friend, cat owner, blogger and communications manager/colleague.

What’s on your list? Would you dare to prioritize? Is there a role you’re not comfortable with, something you would like to change? Think about it and write it down if you wish. If you, like me, are or used to be a workaholic, it can be helpful to have your priorities black on white, to remind you of what's really important when the wheels are turning faster and faster…

What makes you happy?

What makes you smile, laugh or relax? Make a list of these things, focusing on the activities you would like to fill a regular week with. Don’t be shy, don’t hold back – prioritizing comes later. Here’s my list!

This makes me happy: Dancing, reading, writing, being crafty and creative, yoga, photography, walking, spending time with family and friends, seeing new places, trying new things, taking time to prepare my meals and eating healthy, and, finally – doing... nothing.

Dreams and Goals - Wish List

Now, make a wish list of things you want to accomplish this autumn. This list is supposed to be specific and more goal oriented than the last one.

Like this:

I dream of: Freshen up my French, writing a novel (get started), take Bollywood dancing lessons, take ballet lessons, learn how to turn clay (dreja, in Swedish), and get started with an embroidery project.

If this were a bread recipe, this would be the part where it would say: set aside to rise. So, let these thoughts soak in during the day. Tomorrow, it's time to take a new look at the lists, with fresh eyes, and start prioritizing.

Happy planning!

What are your best planning tips for a happy everyday life? I'd love to hear about them!

Home Sweet Home

Some call it rootlessness. I say it’s the inner strength allowing you to always carry your home within yourself, and not necessarily tie it to one particular place on earth. With many childhood homes and none of them left, I have a thousand homes and still none at all. A home to me is essential but elusive, and that’s exactly how I want it.

Yet, there is something special about the place on earth where the headstones bear your family name, where the houses are built by the same hands that have shaped your family traditions and where the soil bear traces of your ancestors’ feet. I’m beginning to understand that now.

Relaxing in the chair my grandfather once made, I’m suddenly gaining a new understanding of home. I want to return to this place, this house, and this chair for the rest of my life.

I have just returned back home - home home - after a week in my family’s worn and weather-beaten but loved summerhouse in Estonia. This is where my grandparents lived before world war and communism.

Share and Care

This post is about the Swedish Council for Organ and Tissue Donation and will not be translated to English.

 <a href="http://www.livsviktigt.se/Sidor/default.aspx"><img src="ADRESSEN TILL DIN BILD" border="0"></a>
